Why Some Rooms Feel Loud Even When Nobody Is Shouting

Have you ever walked into a restaurant or cafeteria and immediately noticed how loud it feels, even though nobody seems to be shouting? In many cases, the people aren’t the problem… The room itself is.

When sound is produced, it travels outward until it reaches a surface. Hard materials such as glass, concrete, tile, and painted drywall reflect sound rather than absorb it. In spaces with many reflective surfaces, these sound waves continue bouncing around long after they are created. This phenomenon is known as reverberation.

As more people enter the room, the problem compounds. Each conversation adds additional sound energy, which reflects throughout the space and raises the overall noise level. The result is a constant buildup of background noise that can make speech harder to understand.

This often triggers what’s known as the Lombard Effect—a natural human tendency to increase vocal volume when surrounded by noise. As the room becomes louder, people instinctively speak louder to be heard. Others then do the same, creating a feedback loop that further increases the noise level.

This effect is especially common in restaurants, cafeterias, and open office environments. In restaurants, it can make conversations exhausting. In cafeterias, it can create a chaotic atmosphere during peak hours. In open offices, excessive reverberation can reduce speech privacy and make concentration more difficult.

Fortunately, acoustical treatments can significantly improve these environments. Sound-absorbing ceiling panels, wall treatments, baffles, and other acoustical products help reduce reverberation by absorbing sound energy before it can continue reflecting throughout the space. The result is a more comfortable environment where conversations remain clear without requiring people to raise their voices.
